Why LayoffOS exists
LayoffOS grew out of my own experience losing work while caring for my child through an illness. I learned how overwhelming it can be to manage finances, benefits, deadlines, and next steps while your family already needs so much of you.
I wanted one place to organize it all. That experience inspired LayoffOS.
I keep my name and family photos private to protect my child's privacy, but I'm sharing the experience because it explains why this tool matters to me.

What's free, and what does the $39 add?
Free, with no account: your runway estimate (with and without expected payments), your deadline list with calendar export, a printable “my next 7 days” plan, this week's task list, backups, and the 24-hour checklist. LayoffOS Complete ($39 one-time) adds spending triage, the severance & benefits organizer, insurance comparison, the full editable 4-week plan, the job search tracker, and the prompt and message library. Anything you enter for free carries over if you upgrade.
Can I see everything before paying?
Yes. Explore the Demo opens every screen, including the paid ones, filled with a fictional household three days after a layoff. The demo runs separately from your own plan in that browser tab: editing, resetting, or exiting it never changes your plan or purchase, and it disappears when you close the tab.
Where is my data stored?
Your plan is saved in this browser on this device. It isn't uploaded to us and doesn't sync between devices. A backup is a file you download from Settings (Download Backup File) and keep yourself; it contains everything you entered, so store it somewhere private. Purchase details are handled separately by Stripe.
What if I clear my browser data or switch devices?
Clearing this site's browser data, or using a private window, removes the plan saved in that browser. Before that happens, download a backup from Settings. On the new browser, use Settings → Restore from a backup; you'll see what's in the file and confirm before anything is replaced. Restore Purchase (with the email you paid with) restores paid access only, not your plan. If a plan is lost without a backup, we can't recover it.
How does it treat severance I haven't received yet?
You mark each expected payment as already received, confirmed but not paid yet, or not sure yet. The main estimate counts your cash plus confirmed payments; uncertain ones are shown separately, and received ones aren't counted twice. You can compare the estimate with cash on hand only. It doesn't model when a payment arrives, so use take-home amounts and treat the result as an estimate.
Does LayoffOS know my actual severance or benefits deadlines?
No. You enter each date from your own paperwork. LayoffOS shows countdowns, lets you mark items complete, and can export them to your calendar as a one-time file. It doesn't discover or verify deadlines, and it doesn't send reminders. Check each date against your employer, benefits notices, or the official source.
Is LayoffOS financial or legal advice?
No. It's an educational and organizational tool. It doesn't provide individualized financial, legal, tax, insurance, investment, or employment advice. Calculations are estimates based only on what you enter.

How do I access LayoffOS after I pay?
Checkout returns you to LayoffOS with LayoffOS Complete unlocked in that browser. There's no login. In another browser or after clearing browser data, use Restore Purchase in Settings with the email you paid with.
Does my access expire?
No. Your $39 purchase unlocks LayoffOS Complete permanently -- there's no renewal, subscription, or expiration date.
How do the AI prompts work?
They're copy-and-paste prompts for an AI assistant you already use (LayoffOS doesn't send anything to an AI service). Leave out details you wouldn't want shared with that service, and always review what it generates -- it can be wrong.
